Which facial treatment suits my skin type?

By Zaneta Cameberg, authorized skin therapistPublished

A facial treatment gives the best results when it starts from your skin – not the other way around. As an authorized skin therapist I always begin with a skin analysis, but it helps to arrive prepared. Here is a guide to how different skin types and skin conditions usually respond to different treatments.

First: skin type and skin condition are two different things

Your skin type (dry, oily, combination, normal) is largely inherited. Skin conditions – such as dehydration, sensitivity, acne or pigmentation – can come and go and are affected by season, stress, hormones and your skincare routine. A good treatment takes both into account.

Dry or dehydrated skin

Dry skin lacks oil, dehydrated skin lacks water – and both benefit from a treatment that strengthens the skin barrier and replenishes moisture. dermalogica ProSkin is fully tailored to your skin at every visit and is a safe first choice. If your skin also looks dull, a hydration-boosting treatment like Hydrafacial gives a quick glow.

Oily and acne-prone skin

For oily skin and congested pores, the goal is deep cleansing without triggering more oil production. dermalogica PRO Clear is designed specifically for breakout-prone skin, combining deep cleansing with calming, antibacterial ingredients.

Sensitive and rosacea-prone skin

Sensitive skin needs less stimulation, not more. dermalogica PRO Calm focuses on strengthening and soothing – a good choice if your skin easily turns red, tight or reactive.

Pigmentation and uneven skin tone

Sun damage and melasma respond well to treatments that increase cell turnover. dermalogica PRO Bright targets pigmentation specifically, and for more pronounced results a course of chemical peels or microneedling may be the right path.

Mature skin and loss of firmness

When the skin starts losing firmness, the goal is to stimulate collagen production. dermalogica Pro Firm is a firming treatment for face and neck, and microneedling is an effective complement as a course treatment.
