How to prepare for a chemical peel

By Zaneta Cameberg, authorized skin therapistPublished

A chemical peel such as dermalogica Pro Power Peel is one of the most effective treatments for uneven pigmentation, clogged pores, rough skin texture and fine lines. But for your skin to respond as well as possible – and for the peel to be applied at the right strength – there are a few things to keep in mind during the week before your visit.

The week before your treatment

  • Pause strong active products. Stop using retinol/retinoids, AHA and BHA acids and other exfoliating products about 5–7 days before the treatment. The skin should be balanced, not already exfoliated.
  • Avoid sun and tanning beds. Sunburnt or sun-damaged skin should not be peeled. Use sunscreen daily during the week before.
  • No waxing or threading on the face in the last days before the treatment – the skin becomes more permeable and may react more strongly.
  • Tell us about medication and skin changes. Certain medications (for example isotretinoin/Roaccutane) and active cold sores mean the treatment needs to be postponed. Unsure? Call us and we will sort it out before you book.

During your visit

Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment so you have time to fill in your consultation card at your own pace. The treatment starts with double cleansing and face mapping – a skin analysis that determines which acids and how many layers (1–5) your skin receives. You may feel a mild tingling or prickling sensation while the peel is on; this is normal and passes quickly. The 60-minute treatment also includes Pro Eye Flash, a peel developed for the delicate eye area, plus a deep-acting serum and mask.

After the treatment

Immediately afterwards the skin can be slightly red, as after a day in the sun. Over the following days it may feel tight and flake lightly – that is old skin letting go.

  • Avoid makeup for the rest of the day.
  • Skip exercise, sauna and swimming for 48 hours.
  • Do not exfoliate for at least a week and only resume active products once the skin has stopped flaking.
  • Use sunscreen every day – freshly treated skin is extra sensitive to UV radiation.

How many treatments are needed?

Pro Power Peel gives the best results as a course of treatments, where each peel builds on the previous one. How many treatments and which interval suit you depends on your skin and your goals.
