Brazilian wax aftercare – advice for calm skin

After a Brazilian wax, your skin is temporarily more sensitive. The hairs have been removed from the root and waxing has also exfoliated the surface of the skin. Mild redness, small red bumps and tenderness immediately after treatment are therefore common and usually settle within one or two days.

Good aftercare reduces the risk of irritation, inflamed hair follicles and ingrown hairs. Always follow the personal advice from your skin therapist if it differs from the general guidance below.

The first 24–48 hours

  • Keep the area clean and touch it as little as possible. Wash your hands before you need to touch the skin.
  • Take a cool or lukewarm shower and pat dry with a clean towel. Avoid hot baths, saunas and steam rooms.
  • Avoid intense exercise and other activities that cause significant heat, sweat or friction.
  • Avoid swimming pools, the sea and hot tubs.
  • Wear loose clothing and clean, breathable underwear. Tight jeans, leggings and synthetic fabrics can rub against the skin.
  • Avoid sexual activity while the skin is tender or red, usually for 24–48 hours, as friction can increase irritation.
  • Do not apply perfume, deodorant, self-tanner, strong active ingredients or heavy products to the area.
  • Do not shave or wax over the skin, and do not squeeze red bumps.

A cool compress may help if the skin feels hot. If needed, use a mild, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser recommended by your skin therapist.

How to prevent ingrown hairs

Wait until the skin is completely calm, for at least 48–72 hours, before exfoliating. You can then exfoliate gently once or twice a week with a mild product intended for the bikini area. Do not scrub hard or exfoliate irritated or damaged skin.

Moisturise regularly with a mild, fragrance-free product. Avoid shaving between appointments if you plan to continue waxing; instead, let the hair grow to the length your therapist recommends before your next visit.

What is normal – and when should I seek help?

Temporary redness, tenderness, itching and small bumps can occur. Contact the salon if the reaction does not begin to improve or if you are unsure which products to use.

Seek medical advice if redness spreads or you develop increasing pain, severe swelling, pus, weeping skin or fever. These may be signs of an infection that needs assessment by a healthcare professional.
